Our Love for Orange Wines
Since Orange Wine Day fell on October 6, we couldn’t resist sharing our love for this unique style of wine and highlighting a couple of our favorites. 🍊
When most people think of wine, they think red, white, or rosé — but have you ever heard of orange wine? It’s not made from oranges! Instead, orange wine is created by fermenting white grapes with their skins, just like red wine. This gives the wine a deeper color (think copper or amber) and more complexity, often with a touch of tannin — a perfect bridge between reds and whites.
Why We Love It
For us, orange wine is often more exciting than rosé. It’s closer to a red in body and flavor but still has the freshness of a white. Less sweet, more interesting — and always a conversation starter at the table!
Wine #1: Sun Goddess by Mary J. Blige (Italy, Pinot Grigio Ramato, 2023)
- Producer: Fantinel
- ABV: 12.5%
- Price: Around $30–35
- Color: Tomato-tinged copper/auburn (hence the Italian “tomato”)
- Aromas: Pear, apricot, melo, with subtle floral notes
- Palate: Light and refreshing, tastes of pear and mineral
- Pairings 🍽️: Light salads, soft cheeses, seafood, or just as a charming aperitif
Our Take: This is a light, easy-going wash we’d happily pour for anyone. Think of it like a non-sweet pear cider but far more sophisticated. Perfect for casual sipping or pairing with light bites.
Wine #2: Orange Grundy Vetliner (Austria, 2023)
- Producer: Grundy Weingut
- ABV: 13%
- Price: Around $25–28
- Aromas: Pear with a hint of hay
- Palate: Grapefruit, green apple, bright and lively
- Pairings 🍽️: Grilled vegetables, chicken skewers, roasted root vegetables, or mild cheeses
Our Take: A very approachable and refreshing orange wine, slightly more affordable than the Sun Goddess but just as enjoyable. Crisp, intriguing, and a perfect introduction to the world of orange wines.
Why You Should Try Orange Wine
Both of these wines are great examples of what orange wine can be — light, food-friendly, and wonderfully complex. We encourage you to explore these and other orange wines and see how they challenge your expectations of what white wine can be. 🍷
