Celebrating Mexican Wines – The Wine Couple’s Experience
When we discovered that October 7 is Mexican Wine Day, we were excited to explore wines from a region we love but haven’t shared much about — Mexico! 🇲🇽
Why was this day established? Mexican Wine Day celebrates the country’s centuries-long winemaking tradition, which dates back to the 16th century when Spanish missionaries planted the first vineyards. Today, Mexico is best known for its wines from Baja California’s Valle de Guadalupe, but other regions are emerging as well. The day honors the history, culture, and flavors of Mexican wines and encourages wine lovers around the world to explore them.
We love Mexican traditions and foods, so we figured—why stop there? Time to sip our way into Mexican wines! We picked one red and one white to see what kind of fiesta they bring to the glass. 🎉🍷
Red Wine: Chateau Domecq 2021, Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico
- ABV: 13%
- Price: Around $18–22
- Style: Value Red Wine
- Aroma: Oak, vanilla
- Taste: Red fruit, plum, peppery spice, and dark chocolate
Pairings 🍽️:
- Grilled meats or roasted vegetables
- Pasta with tomato or mushroom sauces
- Hearty stews or braised dishes
- Semi-firm cheeses like Manchego, Gouda, or aged cheddar
Our Take: This red was affordable and drinkable, with pleasant fruit and spice notes. While it wasn’t our favorite, it’s approachable and versatile enough to enjoy with a wide range of foods.
White Wine: XA by Domecq, Mexico
- ABV: 12.5%
- Price: Around $20–25
- Style: White Wine
- Aroma: Pear, mineral
- Taste: Honey, green apple, subtle olive oil notes
Pairings 🍽️:
- Seafood, shellfish, or grilled fish
- Light pasta dishes or vegetable-based meals
- Salads with fruit or citrus accents
- Mild cheeses or soft appetizers
Our Take: The white was fresh, light, and mineral-driven, perfect for pairing with a variety of dishes. Although it wasn’t a standout for us, it was a palatable, budget-friendly option for casual enjoyment anywhere.
Looking Ahead
Based on the pairings we identified, we will be pairing these wines would with classic Mexican dishesfor our Día de los Muertos celebration!
- Chateau Domecq Red: Could shine with carne asada tacos, mole poblano, chiles rellenos, or enchiladas with red sauce — dishes that match its red fruit, peppery spice, and chocolatey notes.
- XA White: Would be lovely alongside ceviche, grilled fish tacos, quesadillas, or fresh salads with avocado and citrus — complementing its pear, honey, and mineral flavors.
We’re excited to explore these pairings for the first time this November 1 and will share our experience with you!
